Spring allergies are a common source of stress to millions of people, do you know what you can do to make them more tolerable?

Spring time is here! The weather is getting warmer, the snow is melting, and flowers are blooming. How beautiful, right? Visually, perhaps. But why are flowers and other plants blooming? They are blooming because they need to reproduce, and they reproduce through pollen and spores which are released into the air and can travel for hundreds of miles. It's this pollen that triggers allergies for millions of people. What should you do during this time to relieve yourself of all the sneezing?

DOs

  • Start taking your antihistamines early in the season before the season starts, and take them before you go to bed.
  • Alternate your allergy medication. You can become insensitive to medication after taking to for about 4-6 weeks. Switching for 2 weeks should be enough time before you switch back to the original.
  • Change the air filter in your home before each new season. A clean filter will sift through as much pollen as it can.
  • Add Greek yogurt to your diet or take a probiotic that contains lactobacillus casei (a naturally occurring bacteria that grows in the human intestine which helps keep the bad bacteria at bay).

DON'Ts

  • Open the windows of your home and car during the peak pollen times.
  • Stressing is something you should try to avoid as it increases cytokine€”the hormone associated with allergy symptoms.
  • Let your pets sleep on the bed with you as they may carry pollen in their fur.
