For many of us, bedtime is second-nature. Without it, we wouldn't be able to do the necessary tasks that our lives require us to do every day. There's an estimated 50-70 million people in the U.S. that suffer from sleep disorders that hinder them from getting the necessary rest their bodies need to function properly. National Sleep Awareness Week (March 6€”13) is an opportunity for us to think about how our sleep positively affects us, and take necessary steps to ensure that everyone catches their much needed Zzzs.
To raise awareness, below are 4 sleep disorders that millions of people have to live with.
Narcolepsy is neurological sleep disorder caused by the brain's inability to regulate the sleep-wake cycle your body needs to know when to fall asleep and wake up. This causes people to fall asleep in the middle of the day without much control over the action. This is especially dangerous should the person be behind the wheel! There is currently no cure for narcolepsy.
People with this often feel like there are little pins and needles pricking them throughout the day, with the sensation becoming stronger at night. It might help to reposition one's legs or walk around, but, more often than not, it must be treated with medication.
Sleep apnea causes breaks in respiration while sleeping. These breaks could happen during any time of the night, and, if left untreated, could lead to serious health problems like: high blood pressure, heart attack, and strokes due to the lack of oxygen the body is being exposed to throughout the night.
Insomnia covers many sleep disorders that cause the person to have trouble sleeping at night. Some can be controlled to prevent it, while others can't. These can range from worrying about bills, to having depression. Symptoms include: troubles sleeping, waking up many times at night, waking up tired, and facing fatigue during the day.
If you feel you may have one of these disorders, please talk to your doctor for further information.
