Preventing Heat IllnessesBeat The Heat This Summer

As the weather warms, we all tend to get excited. Unfortunately, many people get a little too excited and expose themselves to the sun too greatly, resulting in heat illnesses. To help you beat the heat in New York this summer, here is a quick guide to preventing and treating heat illness.

To ensure your body is able to keep itself cool, wear light layers that cover your skin and protect it from sun exposure. Seek shade whenever possible, and make sure you drink plenty of water.

If you do find yourself stricken with a heat illness, here is what to do:

  • Heat Cramps: If you notice painful cramps or spasms in your legs and abdomen, you may be experiencing heat crams. For cramping muscles, apply firm pressure. Spasming muscles should be gently massaged. Give the individual small drinks of water if he or she is nauseous; if not, do not give him or her any water but move the individual to a cool area immediately.
  • Heat Exhaustion: If you feel weak, dizzy, nauseous, faint, are sweating heavily, and/or have a quick, weak pulse, you may have heat exhaustion. Move to a cool area, lie down, and loosen any tight clothing. Apply cool, wet cloths to your pulse points and take small sips of water. If you vomit, seek medical attention.
  • Heat Stroke: Characterized by a rapid pulse, fainting, red skin, a body temperature above 103 F and an altered mental state, heat stroke is very serious. Take someone suffering from heat stroke immediately to the hospital or call 911. Apply cool, wet cloths to the individuals pulse points, but do not give him or her water.

We hope this guide will help you beat the heat! So you can protect yourself from the sun, let the experts protect you. For all of your insurance needs in White Plains and the surrounding area, contact Scavone Insurance Agency Center LLC today.
