Maintenance Tasks for All Homeowners

Your home should be organized, clean, and tidy because a clean home is a happy home.

You have the basics of homeownership maintenance down to a science after years of owning one. You change the ceiling fan blade direction during the summer (convection current), you scrub the inside and outside of your windows each spring (condensation), and you remove every drop of your sprinkler system before the first frost (expansion through an exothermic reaction of hydrogen bonds). Science! But are you sure that you're taking care of everything? Here are some maintenance tasks all homeowners should do at least once a year and the science behind them.

Salt Your Water Softener

If you don't want to use your table salt for this project, you'll have to go to your local hardware store. As calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) build up in your water tank, sodium can flush out these hard minerals through a process called ion exchange. Because sodium has a weaker positive charge than the Ca and Mg, it makes it easier to clean.

Check Humidity

Humidity is determined by how much water vapor molecules make up the atmosphere in question. You typically want to aim for humidity levels of 30 to 50 percent. Anything higher, and it could promote the growth of mildew and black mold, which could cause health problems and even structural ones if left unchecked.

Don't let your home fall victim to these easily treatable home disasters. Use science to your advantage and protect your home.
