June is National Safety Month

The beginning of the summer month serves as a time to remind us about general safety which we can use to be a safer community.

Injuries are the leading cause of disability for all ages, and they are the major cause of death for Americans aged 1 to 44. While this may sound like a bleak statistic, but the good news is that most of these injuries are very much preventable. The best way for everyone to stay safe is for everyone to spread the word about ways to reduce the risk of injuries. Encourage communities, workplaces, families, and individuals to identify and report safety hazards. This June, spread awareness on National Safety Month because a safe community is a better community.

The List of Safety Tips to Protect Against Home and Work Accidents

  • Aisles, stairs, and walkways should be clutter-free; spills should be wiped, toys and other objects should be picked up, and cabinet drawers need to be closed when not in use.
  • Use handrails in stairways; take one step at a time and report or repair broken stairs or loose stair coverings.
  • Apply nonskid floor coatings and slip-resistant mats where falls are likely. Slow down and take small steps when walking on a wet or slippery surface. Also, keep your center of gravity directly over the leg with which you are stepping. (Ever see a penguin walk?)
  • Inspect ladders before and after every use.

The List of Safety Tips to Protect Against Roadside Accidents

  • Use your turn signals to indicate where you will be turning. The driver behind you can't read your mind and can't know you're about to slow down to make a turn.
  • Check your mirrors when you slow down, change lanes, before and after turns (and to make sure your hair looks good (kidding!)).
  • Be sure to give at least 4 seconds of space between you and the next car on the highway. Should they brake suddenly, you'll have enough time to react.
