With Labor Day just around the corner, it is the perfect time to get your holiday plans ready. While celebrating the holiday, it is also a good time to learn a little bit more about the day. Keep these fun Labor Day facts in mind when you are enjoying your day off with your loved ones.

  1. The first Labor Day started in Canada in 1872 as a large demonstration of people demanding rights for workers. It made its way down to the United States not long after its beginning.
  2. The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York. The celebration was planned by the Central Labor Union, and included a parade of around 10,000 workers. All of the workers that participated in the parade took unpaid leave in order to march past City Hall to a gathering that included speeches, concerts, and a picnic.
  3. Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day an official holiday in 1887.
  4. Congress passed an act on June 28, 1894, which made the first Monday in September a legal holiday in all territories and the District of Columbia.
  5. Labor Day is the celebration of the achievements and contributions of the more than 155 million men and women who are work in the United States workforce.
  6. The 8-hour work day was established in 1916 with the passing of the Adamson Act. This act was the first federal law that regulated work hours within private companies.
  7. Labor Day is the unofficial last day of summer, which marks the start of many schools throughout the country.
