Reduce your risk of heart disease by following these four simple rules.
In the U.S., heart disease is the number one leading cause of death among both men and women. It is responsible for approximately 1 in 4 deaths! For some groups, such as Black Americans, the chance is even greater than the national average. As a nation, it is our duty to change these statistics; the good news is that heart disease can be preventable by following four simple rules€”which could save your life.
- Quit Smoking. Apart from a wide variety of cancers smoking causes, it greatly increases your chances of heart disease. It is best to quit as soon possible, but we know it's easier said than done. Get help from your loved ones, or visit smokefree.gov.
- Control Your Blood Pressure. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart disease. 70 million people are affected with high blood pressure, and because it is so common, its threat can often be seen as low. However, less than half of all people with high blood pressure have their condition under control. Take these steps to reduce your risk of high blood pressure, or to reduce your already high pressure:
- Exercise at least 30 minutes 5 days of the week
- Follow your doctor's advice!
- Avoid foods that are high in sodium, saturated and trans fats, and cholesterol
- Cholesterol. The only way to know if you're suffering from high cholesterol is by getting your blood tested. If you are one out of the three Americans this affects, be sure to follow your doctor's advice on how to prevent high cholesterol, or reduce your levels if they are high.
- Aspirin. Talk to your doctor and see if taking aspirin every day is the right move for you.
