Car theft has become a growing problem in the US. According to data released by the FBI, car thefts have increased by 11.8% from 2019 to 2020, with 810,400 vehicles stolen in 2020, compared to 721,885 in 2019. This tremendous increase in the number of thefts also indicates the rising negligence of car owners. As technology advances, the methods of car theft are also changing.

We have compiled a list of tips to help you prevent car theft by boosting your car's safety. Read on to learn more.

Tips to Protect Your Car from Getting Stolen

  1. Lock your steering wheel - Always keep your steering wheel locked. If a thief enters your car, the steering wheel lock can prevent the wheel from moving when the vehicle is not in use.
  2. Never leave your car running and unattended - Leaving your car running while you step out of it is an invitation to thieves. So, shut your car before stepping out, even if you are only within walking distance.
  3. Install car alarms - While most cars come equipped with an alarm, if your car doesn't have a car alarm, you should buy one to prevent theft.
  4. Remove your keys/fob from the vehicle - Never keep your car keys or fob in the car. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) found that between 2016 and 2018, nearly 230,000 vehicles were stolen because the fob was left inside the car.
  5. Park in areas familiar to you - You should always park your car in areas familiar to you. Avoid parking in dark or dimly-lit areas where thieves can easily access your vehicle without being seen.
  6. Install a vehicle immobilizer system - This electronic security device fitted to a motor vehicle prevents the engine from starting unless you insert the correct key.
  7. Never leave your valuables inside the car - Valuables like mobile phones, laptops, purses, etc., can attract the attention of passersby. So, avoid keeping such valuables in your car, and even if you have to, ensure it is well concealed from the prying eyes of thieves.
  8. Install GPS device - If your car gets stolen, a GPS device can help you track your vehicle easily.
  9. Get your car's vehicle identification number (VIN) etched on your windows - Car thieves would not look at the windows before stealing the car, and they won't take the trouble of replacing all the glass.
  10. Always keep your doors locked - Keep your doors locked even when you are sitting inside your car, especially when driving to unknown destinations.
