Know what a proof of loss is when you need one to file a claim in White Plains, NY.

Should you get into an accident, be sure to contact your auto insurance company as soon as possible and file an accident claim. If you believe that, instead of an auto-to-auto accident, your car has been the victim of theft or vandalism, contact the police first€”then your provider as your insurance company will ask for the police report.

After your claim has been filed, your auto insurance company will assign it to a claims adjuster. They will schedule a date and time in which they will examine your vehicle. This is the first step in proving the extent of your accident and your claim. If the claims adjuster declares a €œtotal loss,€ or damaged more than its worth, your insurance company must inform you of their decision. Know what to expect when you have to file a proof of loss should your car be part of an accident.

The Statement.

A written statement is generally required by insurance companies within a certain time frame. The information that you must provide to your insurance company is:

  • Your first and last names
  • Driver's license number
  • Your car's make/model/year
  • Vehicle I.D. number
  • Insurance policy number
  • Start and end dates of your policy
  • Lienholder's name, mailing address, and telephone number

You must provide this information, regardless of whose fault it is found to be.  And remember to be as specific as possible when it comes to the damages of your car. Include:

  • Date of accident
  • How the accident happened (e.g. t-boned due to another driver not stopping at a stop sign)
  • Names of all involved
  • Type(s) of damage (e.g. vandalism, and/or collision, etc.)
  • Weather conditions (e.g. raining, hailing, etc.)

Some companies will send you a blank sworn statement that you must sign and get notarized by a licensed notary before it is submitted. While not necessary, contacting an accident attorney might be helpful to you if you have any doubts over the document.

Photographic evidence.

Be sure to have at least 4 clear pictures of your car before any repairs are done. These will help you receive compensation as they will provide evidence!
